🐾 Puppy Prep 101: What Every New Yorkie Parent Needs
Welcoming a new Yorkie puppy? Here’s how to prepare for your tiny bundle of fluff and love!
There’s nothing more exciting (or heart-melting) than bringing home a Yorkie puppy. With their big personalities and tiny frames, these pups quickly become the heart of the home. But before you’re knee-deep in belly rubs and tail wags, there are a few things every new Yorkie parent should know.
Whether you’re a first-timer or just brushing up, here’s everything you’ll need to give your pup the healthiest, happiest start possible.
🏠 1. Safe & Cozy Space
Start by puppy-proofing your home. Yorkies are curious and tiny, which means they can get into things quickly.
✔️ Baby gates
✔️ A playpen or crate for safe downtime
✔️ Soft bed and warm blanket
✔️ Toys (teething toys especially!)
🍽 2. The Right Food
Start your pup on a high-quality, small-breed puppy food. I personally love PawTree Chicken & Oatmeal—it’s gentle on their tummies and packed with nutrition. Fresh food can also be introduced gradually.
💡 Pro Tip: Make feeding a calm ritual and keep fresh water available at all times.
🐶 3. Supplements for a Strong Start
Start their wellness routine early. I give my pups:
• Multivitamin – for growth support
• PawTree Gastro Pro Plus – gut + immune health
• Salmon Oil – for skin, coat, and brain support
• Joint Support – start young for long-term joint health
• Plaque Control – trust me, your future self will thank you
👉 Gabby and Maci take their supplements daily—and yes, they’re wrapped in liverwurst!
🧼 4. Grooming Essentials
Yorkies need regular grooming, so get them comfortable early.
• Puppy shampoo (gentle and tear-free)
• Brush for their fine coat
• Nail clippers or a Dremel
• Yorkie-sized toothbrush or dental chews
Make grooming fun! Use treats and lots of praise.
🏥 5. Vet Visit & Wellness Plan
Book your first wellness checkup within a few days of bringing your pup home. Your vet can guide you on vaccines, flea/tick prevention, and spaying/neutering timelines.
📋 Keep a folder of all your vet records, microchip info, and growth tracking.
🐾 6. Socialization & Training
Start slow but steady. Introduce your puppy to sounds, new surfaces, gentle people, and short car rides. Basic training builds confidence—use lots of praise, treats, and patience.
💡 Enroll in a puppy kindergarten class if possible—it’s great for both of you!
💕 Final Thoughts
Your new Yorkie may be tiny, but their love and loyalty are HUGE. Give them a calm, structured start and you’ll be amazed at how quickly they blossom.
And remember—you’re not in this alone. Whether you need wellness tips, nutrition support, or just want to gush about your new fur baby, I’m here for you.
