Ask Me Anything: Yorkie Edition
Posted on April 23 | Yorkie Tales Blog – Setareh Yorkies
One of the things I love most about sharing our lives with Maci and Gabby online is connecting with other Yorkie lovers. Whether you’re a fellow Yorkie parent, future puppy owner, or just Yorkie-obsessed like me, you’ve probably had questions pop up about grooming, feeding, training, and all the little quirks that make this breed so unique.
So today, I’m answering the most common questions I get—straight from my DMs, blog comments, and Instagram stories. Let’s dive into your Yorkie FAQs!
💬 Q: Do Yorkies shed?
A: Not in the traditional sense! Yorkies have hair instead of fur, so they don’t shed like other dogs. You might notice a stray strand here or there, but no major shedding. That said, their hair does require regular brushing and grooming to avoid mats and tangles.
💬 Q: How often do you bathe your Yorkies?
A: I give them a bath once a week, sometimes every 5–7 days depending on how active they’ve been or if we’ve had outdoor playtime. Because they have long hair and are so close to the ground, they pick up dust and dirt easily. I use gentle, nourishing products to avoid drying out their skin—see my Grooming 101 post for all my favorite picks!
💬 Q: What do you feed them and why?
A: I follow a fresh + functional feeding routine with support from PawTree. We combine lightly cooked proteins with healthy veggies, and rotate in freeze-dried raw patties topped with supplements like omega oil and probiotics. It supports digestion, skin health, and picky appetites! You can read all the details in my recent post: What I Feed My Yorkies in a Day.
💬 Q: Are Yorkies good with kids?
A: Yes—but with supervision! Yorkies are small and fragile, so young children need to be taught how to handle them gently. That said, my daughter and our Yorkies are the best of friends. Yorkies are loyal, loving, and very people-oriented. Just be sure to create a safe environment for everyone.
💬 Q: How big do your Yorkies get?
A: Both Maci and Gabby are on the petite side, but within the breed standard. Most adult Yorkies weigh between 4–7 lbs. Genetics, nutrition, and overall health all play a role. I always recommend working with a responsible breeder who prioritizes size predictability and breed integrity.
💬 Q: Do they bark a lot?
A: Yorkies can be vocal—they’re natural watchdogs with a big personality! But with training and structure, you can absolutely manage barking. I’ve worked on desensitizing mine to doorbells, visitors, and noises, and it’s made a huge difference. Yorkies thrive on routine and consistency.
💬 Q: What’s your biggest Yorkie tip?
A: Start routines early and stay consistent. Whether it’s grooming, feeding, or potty habits—Yorkies are smart and learn quickly, but they do best with structure. Also, never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement. And finally… enjoy the snuggles—they’re truly lap dogs at heart.
