Some dogs come into your life and change it forever.
For our family, that dog was Ruby.
Ruby came into my life in the most unexpected way—through the veterinary clinic I was working at (not my current one). She arrived in heartbreaking condition: severely neglected, her little body covered in mats, suffering from a systemic yeast infection, with painful, inflamed ears and skin.
Her family couldn’t afford the treatment plan she so desperately needed—$500 just for the immediate care, not to mention the ongoing medical support she’d require. So, with heavy hearts, they made the difficult decision to surrender her.
That’s when Ruby’s real story began.
✨ Love at First Sight
Despite her rough condition, there was something about Ruby—something deeply sweet and undeniably special. I saw past the mats and the yeast and the medical charts. I saw a dog who deserved so much more.
We brought her home for a trial, just to see how things would go. It didn’t take long to realize she wasn’t going anywhere. Ruby had found her family, and we had found a piece of our hearts we didn’t know was missing.
🐾 The Best Dog We Never Knew We Needed
Ruby was a Schnauzer-Yorkie mix with a soft, soulful gaze and a pink bandana that became her signature look. She was gentle, loyal, loving—and she quickly became my daughter Charlotte’s dog.
They were inseparable. Ruby followed Charlotte everywhere, curled up next to her at bedtime, and stood guard like the little furry protector she was.
Her calm temperament and sweet nature showed me just how amazing the Yorkie personality could be—loving, loyal, expressive, and smart.
🌈 Saying Goodbye
We adopted Ruby when she was about five years old, and she blessed our family with nearly a decade of companionship and love. When she was around 14, Ruby’s health began to decline. Despite our best efforts, we eventually had to say goodbye.
We buried her in our backyard so Charlotte could visit her any time she wanted. Ruby may be gone, but her presence is still very much a part of our lives—and always will be.
💛 Why Ruby Will Always Be the Heart of Setareh Yorkies
Ruby is the reason I fell in love with Yorkie mixes.
She’s the reason I became passionate about pet wellness.
She’s the reason Setareh Yorkies exists.
Her story reminds me every day why I do what I do—why health testing matters, why compassionate care matters, why these tiny dogs deserve the absolute best we can give.
Ruby didn’t have the easiest start, but she had the happiest ending. And in turn, she gave us a beginning we never saw coming.
