Teething Puppies? How We Handle the Bitey Phase with Love
Posted on April 29 | Yorkie Tales Blog – Setareh Yorkies
Ah, the teething phase… also known as the “everything is a chew toy” chapter of puppyhood. 🦷💕
If you’ve had a Yorkie puppy (or have one right now!), you know just how nibbly those tiny teeth can be. But teething isn’t just about biting—it’s a real developmental stage that can be uncomfortable for puppies and a bit overwhelming for their humans.
At Setareh Yorkies, we believe in handling this stage with patience, structure, and lots of love. Here’s how we help our puppies—and their future families—navigate the bitey phase with confidence and care.
🐶 When Does Teething Start?
Most Yorkie puppies begin teething between 3 and 6 months of age, as they transition from baby teeth to adult teeth. You might notice:
• Increased chewing and nibbling
• Sore or inflamed gums
• Drooling
• Whining or fussiness
• Less interest in dry kibble
• Even a lost baby tooth or two (don’t worry—it’s normal!)
💕 How We Comfort Teething Puppies
Our goal during this phase is to soothe discomfort, redirect biting, and help them learn what’s okay (and not okay!) to chew on.
Here’s what works for us:
1. Frozen Washcloths & Chew Toys
A classic trick! We wet a clean washcloth, twist it, and freeze it for a soothing DIY chew. We also offer safe puppy teething toys that are soft enough for baby teeth but satisfying to chew.
2. Puppy-Safe Teething Rings or Bones
We love offering frozen raw bones (sourced safely) or teething rings designed for small breeds. These help relieve pressure on sore gums while providing enrichment.
3. Distraction + Redirection
We never scold for mouthing. Instead, we gently redirect to a toy or chew and praise them when they choose correctly. This reinforces positive chewing habits without creating fear.
4. Teething Treats & Soothers
Some of our go-tos include cold carrot sticks, PawTree Chillax chews, and natural chews like yak milk sticks. These give them a purpose for their chewing and help calm them, too.
5. Comfort & Routine
A consistent routine helps puppies feel safe and secure during this uncomfortable stage. We also offer extra cuddles, warm snuggly bedding, and lots of positive reinforcement.
🦴 Bitey Phase vs. Aggression (Important!)
Puppy biting is normal and developmental, not a sign of aggression. It’s how they explore their world and soothe their gums. The key is to gently teach bite inhibition and offer appropriate alternatives early on.

Final Thoughts
Teething is temporary—but how you handle it can make a lasting impact. Be patient, stay consistent, and remember: your little land shark is just figuring things out. Before you know it, those baby teeth will be gone and you’ll miss those silly, nibbling puppy days.
