A guide for new Yorkie parents: the chaos, the cuddles, and everything in between.
Bringing home a Yorkshire Terrier puppy is one of the most exciting experiencesâbut letâs be real, it can also be a little overwhelming. These tiny pups pack big personality into their small frames, and theyâll change your world in the best (and sometimes loudest) ways possible.
Whether youâre counting down the days until Gotcha Day or just brought home your new bundle of fur, hereâs what you can expectâand how to set your new pup up for success from the start.
đś 1. Yorkie Energy Is Real
Yorkie puppies are curious, spunky, and full of zoomies. They love to explore, play, and yesâbark at shadows. Donât be surprised if your new pup is bouncing off the walls one minute and curled up in your lap the next.
Tip: Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Puzzle toys, short training sessions, and chew toys are your new best friends.
𧸠2. Theyâre TinyâBut Donât Tell Them That
Yorkies are brave to a fault. They often act like theyâre ten times their size, which can be hilarious and a little nerve-wracking. This confidence is part of their charm, but it means youâll need to puppy-proof everythingâhigh and low.
Tip: Use baby gates, keep small objects out of reach, and be extra cautious on stairs and furniture.
đ¤ 3. Sleep Schedules Take Time
Your Yorkie will need lots of sleep (up to 18-20 hours a day at first!), but they may not settle into a routine right away. Naptime can be unpredictable and bedtime may come with some whining the first few nights.
Tip: Create a cozy crate or playpen space and keep things calm before bed. White noise or a heartbeat puppy toy can help ease nighttime jitters.
đ˝ 4. Tiny Tummies Need Frequent Meals
Yorkie puppies can be prone to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so frequent, small meals are essential. I always recommend talking to your vet, but generally, 3â4 meals a day is ideal for the first few months.
Bonus: I personally love the fresh food + PawTree dry food comboâit keeps our pups nourished with ingredients I trust.
đž 5. Potty Training Is a Process
Be patientâYorkies are smart but can also be stubborn. Potty training takes time, consistency, and a whole lot of praise (and treats!).
Tip: Crate training and a regular potty schedule will make all the difference. Celebrate every success and avoid punishment-based methodsâthey just create confusion.
đ 6. Bonding Takes Time
Your pup may be shy, clingy, or totally fearless on day oneâitâs all normal. Building trust and attachment is a journey, and every puppy moves at their own pace.
Tip: Cuddles, calm voice tones, and gentle touch go a long way. Let your puppy lead when it comes to affection, and donât force too much too fast.
đ 7. Itâs OK to Feel Overwhelmed
Yes, there will be accidents. Yes, there will be chewed shoes. But there will also be kisses, tail wags, and those magical moments where you realize this tiny creature already owns your heart.
Youâve got this. And youâre not aloneâIâm here cheering you on every step of the way.
đŹ Need Help? Just Ask!
Whether itâs setting up your home, choosing the right products, or surviving the teething phaseâIâve been there. Iâd love to help guide you on your Yorkie parenthood journey.
